Toronto, Ontario — A YouTuber has published a video showcasing his attempts to colour-match the coveted and incredibly exclusive Mystic coating from Ford, and the results aren’t too far off from the original.
Going by the pseudonym of “Fonzie”, the owner of DipYourCar mixed a dry pigment in xylene to create his proprietary blend by Tommy Nelson, owner of the Spray Source. This created an imitation Mystichrome with greens, blues and purples, combined with a gloss coat while a black basecoated DYC Mustang sits in the background.
While the final result leaves us with an undisputedly beautiful car, many commenters affirmed his belief that Mystichrome was among the hardest OEM colours to colour match, with commenter Chris Freyre pointing out that it was “damn near close, except for the missing gold and blue.”
Similarly, commenter Michael Walker said “the only spot that it missed the mark is the vibrance of the colours – still a solid five.”
But why can’t he just order it in like any other paint?
Hot Cars elaborates that the Mystic ChromaFlair paint is heavily restricted, only providing a select number of shops with the clearance to actually use this paint. It is valued at $26,000 per gallon and has only used on 500 Terminator Mustang Cobras in the coupe and convertible variants.
When used by a shop, Ford representatives are present, ready to collect any leftover paint. The reason for this secrecy? It may or may not be used in the production of U.S. $20 bills.
