Sweet Dreams at Sweet Speeds
A Los Angeles couple was driving down a freeway when they looked over to see the driver of the Tesla beside them fast asleep, travelling at almost 120 km/h.
Alishia Olivier filmed the driver through the window of her vehicle while her husband drove. The sleeping man is comfortably slumped back in his seat, arms crossed over his chest, fast asleep while his Tesla operates on autopilot.
“Oh my God, he’s totally asleep,” Olivier can be heard saying in the video. “This is so crazy.”
Tesla’s autopilot feature is meant to assist a driver, not entirely replace one. The company’s website maintains that “autopilot is intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any time.”
When the video footage was taken in California, this is an entirely possible scenario that Ontario drivers could find themselves in. In Canada, Ontario is the only province or territory to allow self-driving cars on public roads.
Thankfully, this incident did not end in a nightmare. At the end of the video, the driver jolts awake and secures a grip on the wheel.
Bear-y Mysterious
On Friday the 13th, a resident of Port Moody, B.C. was awakened in the early hours of the morning when they heard their car alarm sound off.
When they went to investigate, they found an unexpected intruder: a black bear had opened the door to their unlocked vehicle and climbed inside. The bear had then closed the door and locked itself inside the vehicle.
Footage uploaded by Port Moody police shows the bear struggling to escape from the vehicle, pulling at seat belts and clawing at the dashboard.
It is unclear what drew the bear to the vehicle, as there was reportedly no food inside. Perhaps the creature was just curious and looking to explore before settling down for its winter hibernation.
A news release from the Port Moody police said B.C. conservation officers were called to the scene, where they helped free the animal.
Precious Cargo
An Edmonton medical examiner’s office is being investigated by the Alberta government after footage surfaced online showing the business using a truck trailer to store bodies.
The rented refrigerated truck trailer was seen parked near the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) earlier this week. Equipped with 24-hour security and a ramp for easy access, the Justice Department has confirmed that the medical examiner has been using the rented mobile storage unit to accommodate a sudden spike in bodies.
As of Wednesday, Sept. 18, the truck was still parked beside the OCME, alongside a busy commuter road in Edmonton.
Flying Low
An American man was driving down Route 50 near Annapolis, MD when he thought he spotted something strange hurtling toward his car.
It wasn’t a bird nor Superman — but it was a plane.
A single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft was failing to take off from the adjacent Freeway Airport. Instead, it had a brief lift off before crashing onto Route 50 — and into Ryan McClain’s sedan.
McClain’s passenger was able to climb out through the shattered windshield, but McClain needed help. His friend and paramedics were able to help him escape through the back of the car.
The events of the accident remain foggy for McClain, but, incredibly, no one was injured in the accident.
