Markham, Ontario — Ontario could be getting the EV work it has been hoping for as Mayor of Markham, Ont., Frank Scarpitti tweeted on Thursday that a new Tesla facility is bound for the Toronto suburb, in order to help supply the automaker’s gigafactories with battery cells.
“I am delighted to share that Tesla Canada is joining our already robust automotive and technology ecosystem by locating a manufacturing facility in the City of Markham. The facility will be the first branded Tesla Canada manufacturing facility in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to be used at the gigafactories located around the world in the production of batteries,” said Scrapitti in his Twitter post.
Scarpitti also confirmed that the facility will be located “just South of Hwy. 7 west of Warden.”
Tesla has yet to officially comment on the announcement and no completion date has been set, however, Markham has been added to locations listed on the company’s job board. As well, Tesla posted a video to its LinkedIn, encouraging Canadians to join a “growing team in Markham.”
