Aspirational Insights: Canadians are seeking aspirational vehicles, but buying practically says new report

Toronto, Ontario — Canadians want to live in the lap of luxury, according to recently-revealed vehicle search data.

AutoTrader data released in early December reveals that 60 percent of Canadian buyers’ top searched vehicles for 2023 were luxury brands; however, consumers continue to buy with practicality in mind despite optimistic outlooks.

Specifically, among AutoTrader’s top searched vehicles of 2023, the Porsche 911 rose to the number 2 spot, up from number 6 of last year.

However, despite this increase, the Ford F-150 made its ninth appearance as Canada’s most sought-after vehicle and the Dodge Ram 1500 made its way back into the top 10—the second truck to do so since 2019.

Despite Canadian buyers searching for luxury brands, AutoTrader notes that 90 percent of the top 10 vehicles sold in Canada were functionally utility vehicles—mainly trucks and SUVs.

From a provincial breakdown, British Columbia topped the charts with the highest rate of searches for luxury vehicles at 60 percent, while Saskatchewan had the highest searches for more functional vehicles at 80 percent.

For AutoTrader, this data suggests that while drivers may have aspirational dreams for vehicles, they are still going with more practical purchases that represent the rising cost of living in Canada.

To collect its data, the company collected and mined search data and then analyzed over 11 million Canadians visiting AutoTrader.ca.
