An Electric Leap: Zero-emission vehicle registrations jump 53 percent in the first quarter, reports Statistics Canada

Toronto, Ontario — Statistics Canada has reported that significantly more Canadians are driving zero-emission vehicles in the first quarter of 2024, with an increase of 53 percent in registrations year-over-year.

As reported by The Canadian Press, the federal agency says 46,744 new zero-emission vehicles were registered in the first quarter, making up 11.3 percent of total new vehicle registrations.

Moreover, according to Statistics Canada, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) represented most zero-emission vehicle registrations, while plug-in hybrids comprised 27 percent.

The agency also reported that new vehicle registrations were up 16.6 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, but were down 3.1 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2023.

Pickup truck registrations in the country also fell by just over 8 percent—the first time year-over-year that there has been quarterly decreases for this vehicle category after seven consecutive increases.
