Edmonton, Alberta — Équité Association recently revealed data on car theft in Canada showed that Alberta’s auto thieves generally prefer to steal large, older model pickup trucks.
The top five most stolen vehicles in Alberta are:
- Ford F-350
- Ram 1500
- Ford F-150
- Honda Civic
- Chevrolut Silverado 1500
Équité Director of Investigative Services for western Canada, Sid Kingma, told the CBC that the majority of F-350s stolen are models before 2007—when Transport Canada mandated automakers to equip all vehicles with immobilizers and chip keys.
“They are very easy to steal,” said Kingma.
He added that thefts have become much more common and stealthy, as demonstrated by 2022 numbers. In fact, approximately 40 F-150s were stolen between Feb. and Mar. 2022 in Edmonton; the perpetrators were a small group of car thieves from Ontario.
Only seven of those trucks were recovered. Authorities believe the rest were sold overseas. Alberta, however, showed an 80 percent recovery rate in 2022. That number is still slightly lower than in previous years, but it’s much higher than rates seen in Ontario, Quebec or British Columbia.
