Cornwall, Ontario — A new training module that’s part of a newly expanded automotive trades training program for hybrids and electric vehicles is continuing to be developed at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ont.
ADAS training and a module helping technicians deliver this knowledge to apprentices were among the new areas of study announced in the summer as part of a third round of funding for automotive trades training at the college.
The new module aims to address two challenges facing Ontario’s automotive industry: a continued shortage of automotive tradespeople and the need for automotive tradespeople to learn new skills and achieve an understanding of modern, complex repairs.
“The feedback has been amazing,” said Saifullah Sanaye, head of automotive training at the campus. “Auto technicians and shop owners enjoy learning about this advanced technology.”
At the college, ADAS modules consist of an in-person theoretical and hands-on training course led by college instructors for 16 hours of instruction.
Innovation in Automotive Training program is an Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA Canada) in partnership with the Government of Ontario, St. Lawrence College, Conestoga College, Fanshawe College and Plug ‘N Drive.
“We have people coming from over an hour away to attend these training programs,” Sanaye said. “That shows some real dedication and commitment from these experienced automotive service professionals.”
Further eligibility for the program includes possessing Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status, or proof of awaiting permanent resident status; proof of Ontario residency; being 18 years of age or older; and proof of employment in Ontario as a licensed automotive technician or senior-level apprentice.
