Milton, Ontario — Milton, Ont. MP Adam van Koeverden was back in his home riding this past week for a visit with the heads of Fix Network World to talk about the current state of right to repair legislation, including a proposed amendment of the Copyright Act.
Van Koeverden met with Fix Network World founder and CEO, Steve Leal, as well as the company’s regional v-p for Ontario, Daryll O’Keefe, at the Fix Network Regional Training Centre in Milton.
The meeting came about to discuss the possible promotion of Bill C-244, a private member bill brought forward by MP of Richmond Centre, B.C., Wilson Miao, in February.
Bill C-244 seeks to amend the Copyright Act “in order to allow the circumvention of a technological protection measure in a computer program if the circumvention is solely for the purpose of the diagnosis, maintenance or repair of a product.”
The bill would ensure OEM-approved tools and parts are available to the automotive aftermarket, if passed.
“Fix Network has always advocated a strong and coherent approach to the Right to Repair issue that involves engaging all parties connected with the automotive aftermarket sector,” said O’Keefe.
“As vehicles become increasingly sophisticated, we need to start preparing Canadian technicians for the future by educating and training them in the latest repair technologies.”
This meeting between government and Fix Network comes shortly after an Innovation Round Table meeting where the three men, alongside Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, gathered to discuss updates on the complexity of modern vehicles.
