Waterloo, Ontario — BMW is the latest automaker to take a bite out of the berry as Blackberry Limited announced that it has entered a multi-year agreement with the company to develop automation technology.
As part of the agreement, BlackBerry will license its QNX technology to BMW Group, as well as assign a team of engineers to support the development of new SAE Level 2/2+ driving automation functions to be deployed across multiple makes and models, according to Blackberry’s press release.
With this partnership, BMW joins the ranks of 45 other OEMs who make use of BlackBerry QNX technology in their products, including Ford, GM, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Volkswagen.
According to the press release, BMW chose to work with Blackberry based on the company’s proven track record for developing high-quality safety software for the automotive industry.
BlackBerry QNX technology can be found in more than 195 million vehicles worldwide.
