Toronto, Ontario — White tops the charts in terms of the most popular–and safest–car colour, according to a recent report from Kelley Blue Book exploring the most popular car colours in 2024.
White is closely followed by black and grey coatings, respectively, in terms of popularity. However, the overall car-buying market tends to stick to neutrals, the report further indicates that a growing number of consumers do want more expressive colours.
So, are bright-hued vehicles dead? Or are coatings manufacturers making attempts to revive them? Notably, coatings manufacturer PPG recently named Purple Basil as its 2025 automotive colour of the year, with other automotive coatings companies also choosing brighter tones as the top colour of 2025.
The study also notes that when it comes to resale value, today’s popular car colours will make the vehicle more popular to buyers even five years from the initial point of sale.
Finally, when looking at the most popular colours for different vehicle types, for SUVs, grey remains the most popular at 25 percent; white is most popular for minivans at 34 percent; and white is also the most popular for pickup trucks at 27 percent.
In terms of overall vehicle safety, the study concludes that white is also the safest vehicle coating, with a 12 percent less chance of accident involvement in all weather and lighting conditions compared to other shades and hues.
