Toronto, Ontario — According to a new report from Équité Association of Canada, vehicle theft in Ontario has increased by 48 percent in the past three years.
When looking at Équité’s data more specifically, the top 10 most stolen vehicles in Canada are:
- Toyota Highlander (2021) – 3,414 stolen
- Dodge Ram 1500 Series (2022) – 3,078 stolen
- Lexus RX Series (2022) – 3,037 stolen
- Honda CR-V (2021) – 2,988 stolen
- Toyota RAV4 (2021) – 2,690 stolen
- Honda Civic (2019) – 1,654 stolen
- Jeep Wrangler (2021) – 1,641 stolen
- Land Rover Range Rover Series (2020) – 1,533 stolen
- Chevrolet/GMC Suburban/Yukon/Tahoe Series (2023) – 1,488 stolen
- Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series (2006) – 1,383 stolen
The study further notes that “these vehicles are often targeted due to their popularity, high resale value and vulnerabilities associated with keyless ignition systems.”
Additionally, the database reports that almost 115,000 vehicles were stolen nationally in 2023, although this includes vehicles for which no insurance claims were made.
And, when looking only at Ontario statistics, at current theft rates, over 37,000 vehicles are stolen annually in the province. This translates to one vehicle stolen every 14 minutes.
