Rollbacks: More than 2.14 million vehicles in the United States victims of odometer fraud, says new CarFax study

Virginia, United States — A recent CarFax on odometer fraud indicates that more than 2.14 million vehicles on the road in the United States have rolled-back odometers.

The study, run annually, further indicates that this figure represents an 18 percent increase since 2021 and an additional 82,000 vehicles when compared to 2023—the previous record-setting year.

When looking at impacts related to odometer fraud, CarFax notes that victims lose an average of $4,000 USD in vehicle value and face additional unexpected repair costs and potential safety risks.

In the United States, the regions with the highest instances of fraud include California, at 484,500 cases; Texas, at 294,200 cases; and New York State, at 97,400 cases.

As a result, CarFax is encouraging drivers to take certain safety precautions to avoid odometer fraud, including drivers taking their car to a mechanic to verify its condition before buying it.
