Touting Talent: Skills B.C. sees students exercise auto skills

Victoria, British Columbia — Skills B.C., which took place on April 17th, saw students competing in a variety of automotive competitions and demonstrating diverse industry skills.

According to Jamie Maxwell, Director of Competitions for the event, Skills B.C. saw 28 students at both secondary and post-secondary levels competing in automotive technology, autobody repair and car painting competitions.

For the secondary autoservice competition, students participated in multiple stations in order to demonstrate multiple skills such as brake inspection, electrical diagnostics, battery and alternator testing, compressor testing and working on a wiring board.

In the automotive technology competitions, Logan O’Riley took the gold in the secondary school category, while Logan Cursley from Vancouver Island University won in the post-secondary category.

In autobody repair, Connor De Cera-Mcginn won gold in the secondary school competition, while Keagan Behiel from Vancouver Community College took the gold in the post-secondary category.

Finally, in the car painting competitions, Travis Marwaha—the only secondary school participant—took home the gold, while Heidi Durkop from Vancouver Community College won gold for post-secondary.

Maxwell further told Collision Repair that overall, Skills B.C. saw 500 competitors competing in 60 categories. The event, which was open to the public, also saw over 2,000 spectators and was aided by 150 volunteers.

When asked, Maxwell highlighted that “the mission of Skills B.C. is to convince today’s youth that a trade or a technology would make a good, well-paying career.”
