Toronto, Ontario — January 15, 2018 — Canadian auto parts behemoth Magna International may be considering contracting GM’s Oshawa, Ontario facility to manufacture vehicles from different OEMs after GM closes its own operations this year.
In an interview with Automotive News Canada, Magna CEO Don Walker, who once worked within the facility, said any deal would be dependent on Magna securing contracts from enough OEMs to build anywhere from 120,000 to 150,000 vehicles.
The GM plant recently underwent a multi-billion dollar upgrade to accommodate manufacturing more than 25 different vehicle models at once.
While Magna’s manufacturing operations in Canada have focused on building aftermarket parts rather than vehicles, it does operate a facility in Australia that manufactures vehicles contracted by Toyota.
