Toronto, Ontario – September 7, 2018 — Toyota has issued a recall of over one million of its hybrid vehicles worldwide, due to potential fire hazards.
The Japanese manufacturer announced that it will be recalling 7,200 Prius vehicles in Canada, after already recalling 554,000 in Japan and 192,000 in the United States. The target of the recalls is Toyota Prius models ranging from 2016-2018.
“The subject vehicles have an engine wire harness which is connected to the hybrid vehicle Power Control Unit,” Toyota stated.
“A portion of the wire harness could contact the cover at this connection and wear over time, causing an electrical short circuit, which can generate heat. If sufficient heat is generated, there is an increased risk of a vehicle fire.”
To date only one vehicle has been reported emitting smoke, with no one being injured during the malfunction. In Canada no problems have yet been reported.
“For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will check the engine wire harness assembly,” Toyota said.
“If a wire core is exposed, the engine wire harness assembly will be replaced with a new one that includes a protective sleeve. If a wire core is not exposed, protective tape will be installed on the engine wire harness assembly. The repair will be performed at no cost to customers.”
