Toronto, Ontario — August 23, 2018 — Ford has issued a recall for more than 50, 000 120-volt convenience charging cables in North America.
These chargers were originally issued with 2012-15 Ford Focus Electric, 2013-15 Ford Fusion Energi and 2013-15 Ford C-MAX Energi vehicles.
Ford reports that using the charging cord in an AC outlet that is not on a dedicated circuit, is damaged, worn or corroded in anyway could cause temperatures at the wall outlet to increase and result in fires.
Ford said they’re aware of some of the fire reports, but they didn’t reveal as to how many they received. Although, CBC reported that the company had said there were a total of four reported fires but no injuries. In three of the fires, the owners were using extension cords, which is not recommended by the company.
Only specific chargers have this issue:
- 2012-15 Ford Focus Electric vehicles built at Michigan Assembly Plant, Sept. 15, 2011 through March 14, 2015
- 2013-15 Ford Fusion Energi vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, Sept. 4, 2012 through March 5, 2015
- 2013-15 Ford C-MAX Energi vehicles built at Michigan Assembly Plant, April 13, 2012 through March 14, 2015
Ford also says owners will be notified and reminded of correct charging requirements by mail. Owners should take their vehicles to a ford dealer for a replacement, which will include a thermistor to monitor and regulate temperature at the outlet.
