Toronto, Ontario — Faceless mannequins, running red lights and jotting notes in the passenger seat: just another day of testing collision prevention systems at Transport Canada.
A recent video on the department’s YouTube channel showcases some of these behind-the-scenes evaluations of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and collision prevention technologies at Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Test Centre in Blainville, Que.
Here, vehicles are put through a battery of tests with the assistance of PMG technologies, complete with traffic lights, intersections and dummies representing pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
One particular test features a cardboard mockup of a child running across the road at the last second, testing the vehicle’s automatic emergency braking systems ability to intervene.
In the video, Dominique Charlebois, a senior crash avoidance research engineer with Transport Canada said “it’s important to remember that (ADAS) have limitations. It doesn’t work everywhere and can be affected by the angle of the sun, if it rains or if it snows.”
