Sound Blasting: Ferrari patents EV engine noise-amplifying system

Toronto, Ontario — Ferrari has filled a patent for an external speaker system, promising an authentic audio experience that magnifies the sound created by its electric motors.

Rather than an attempted breakout into the modern art scene, this represents an attempt by the luxury carmakers to maintain its status in a world of electric vehicles (EVs), with the first electric Ferrari set to arrive in 2025.

According to a US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent first found by CarBuzz, the design shows a system similar to the Fratzonic chambered exhaust, using several resonance chambers and a speaker to create sounds expected from a combustion engine.

Where Ferarri set themselves apart is their decision to magnify the sound of an electric engine, rather than imitate a combustion engine. In practice, this means creating a tailored a sound signature that can represent its line of EVs in a comparatively unique way to its competitors.

While Ferrari’s decision to eschew traditional combustion vehicle sounds may upset some, their decision to embrace the vehicle’s authentic noises is sure to excite others.
