Calgary, Alberta — Two Alberta doctors were recently honoured by their peers at an annual event celebrating innovation in science and technology.
The Alberta Science and Technology foundation—also known as ASTech—is managed by Technology Alberta and recognizes innovation taking place throughout the province.
Dr. Ghada Nafie is developing an efficient way to extract lithium from “aqueous sources” —seawater, desalination brines, oil- and gas-produced waters, etc.
“Currently, there is not enough metal to produce [lithium] batteries [used in EVs],” wrote ASTech. “Extraction methods are expensive, environmentally disruptive and inefficient.
“Nafie has developed a game-changing process that uses nanoparticles to extract lithium from aqueous sources.”
Dr. Lina Kattan was honoured for her work on connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) capable of self-driving. She is creating new traffic and transit controls fit for both CAVs and human-driven vehicles, allowing them to share the road.
“Her work is providing groundbreaking solutions for urban transportation networks, vital to Canada’s economy,” wrote ASTech.
Both projects were developed at UCalgary.
