Students from Pickering High got to watch Standard Auto Wrecker's car crusher in action.

Toronto, Ontario -- Oct. 8, 2013 -- Standard Auto Wreckers recently hosted a tour for a group of body repair and photography students from Pickering High School.

"It's a great way to give back to the local community," says Standard Auto Wreckers owner David Gold. "It's a nice thing to be able to do."

This is the second time students from Pickering High School have toured the recycling facility,  Gold having been previously approached by the Durham District School Board (DDSB) to host the tour.

Gold says both the school board and the teachers were extremely excited about the opportunity to expose their students to the auto recycling industry, feeling it to be a great chance for them to discover the positive impacts auto recycling has on the environment. He was happy to help the school board communicate to their students a holistic picture of what the auto recyling industry is, with Gold and his team ecstatic to have the chance to put their business on display for eager young minds.

"This is a 'green' industry and they wanted to expose the students to it," says Gold. "By and large people don't know very much about the industry, but they seemed to appreciate the entire process. These kids understand that and for them to see auto recycling as a tangible business, I think they gained an appreciation for its intracies as a business."

Gold says the excitement from the kids was evident during their full tour of the centre's operations. They had the opportunity to see the auto recycling process at every step, from fluid evacuation to how parts are received and evaluated, in addition to how vehicles are brought in and assessed.

"The more we can get young people interested in auto recyling the better. It's nice to be able to explain to people what we do because they'll go home at the end of the day and tell their friends and family and hopefully it fuels more interest in the business," says Gold. "We know we're helping people and it's a nice thing to be able to share that with the world."
