OARA, Assured show support for Heart & Stroke Foundation at Big Bike event PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 27 June 2011 13:28

Burlington, Ontario – June 27, 2011 -- Twenty-nine people riding a bus-shaped bike isn’t something you see on the roads everyday but that is exactly what motorists and pedestrians saw in Burlington, ON last week. On June 16, the Heart and Stroke Foundation held its annual Big Bike event in Burlington.

Of course, OARA has a history of supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Brigitte Pesant, director of business development for OARA, was there to volunteer.

As well, Burlington’s Assured Parkway Collision had a team in the event and completed the course in 10 minutes and 38 seconds, which is very impressive considering it takes 20 minutes on average. More importantly, Assured raised $ 1,800 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Heart and Stroke Big Bike is an annual event held by the foundation. They have eight of these 29-person bikes that travel across the country from March to August. Each location along the way has a fundraising target of $5,000.

Morinville Auto Body goes pink for cancer PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 13 June 2011 15:13

Edmonton, Alberta -- June 13, 2011 -- Steve Hammond, owner of Morinville Auto Body in Edmonton, and his son, Bleyd, have proudly supported the fundraising event Hair Massacure for four years and running. The event, which raises funds for various charities that help children with life-threatening diseases, is dear to the Hammond’s heart. When he was only six-years-old Bleyd was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, a rare disease that affects the body’s blood vessels, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, and heart. If not diagnosed rapidly, it can cause severe coronary artery aneurysms and problems in the circulatory system of the body.

The true cause of the disease is unknown but is treatable if quickly diagnosed. After ruling out several other potential health conditions (there are no lab tests for the disease), Bleyd was fully diagnosed with Kawasaki and began his intensive treatment. He continued to see a cardiologist for nine months after discharge for regular echocardiograms to make sure the disease didn’t negatively affect his heart and blood vessels. Thankfully, Bleyd is now 11 and leads a normal, active life with no side effects.

Shortly after celebrating his seventh birthday, Bleyd decided he to wanted to help those who are trying to find cures for life-threatening diseases. He learned about the fundraiser Hair Massacure where participants shave their heads in order to raise money for cancer research. Bleyd’s hair was quickly dyed pink and, with the help of his dad and a few sponsors, he raised a few hundred dollars towards the charity. Afterwared, Bleyd vowed to let his hair grow through to the following year’s event. In February 2010, Steve chose to join his son with his fundraising efforts as a tribute to his Mom who was recently diagnosed with small cell carcinoma cancer. Steve’s Mom lost her battle with cancer and passed away in July of the same year.

Last year, Steve, Bleyd and their family raised $2,750.00, just shy of their goal of $3,500.00. Money raised from this event is divided amongst the following charities: the Pediatric Oncology Department at the Stollery Children's Hospital, Make-A-Wish Foundation, as well as Ronald McDonald House. Since its inception in 2002, Hair Massacure has raised over $4.7 million.

Tony Goff named Man of the Year by LLS PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 31 May 2011 14:14

Pewaukee, Wisconsin -- May 31, 2011 -- Goff’s Enterprises announced that its president, Tony Goff, has been named Man of the Year for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society’s Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter. LLS’s Man & Woman of the Year Campaign is a 10 week fundraising competition among individuals in communities across the U.S. to raise funds for research and support for families affected by blood cancers.

Goff’s campaign turned in a record $57,963 for the Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter, the company says. The centerpiece of his campaign was a large scale, black tie optional event at the Calatrava at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The event consisted of a live concert in which Goff was the lead singer of the newly formed “52nd Street” Billy Joel Band. The night also featured live and silent auctions and speeches by Marla Buth, the mother of the girl of the year – Corah Buth and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch who recently revealed her battle with cancer. Through the efforts of all candidates in the S.E. Wisconsin Chapter, a total amount of $203,000 was raised.

“I want to thank all of you that contributed to the campaign in so many ways. From the personal and corporate donors, to the volunteers and businesses that gave auction items as well as services that benefitted our ‘Night at the Calatrava’ event, there are literally hundreds of people that contributed to our campaign’s success!” states Tony Goff. “Together we really made a positive difference in the lives of people battling blood cancers.”

And the positive momentum created by this campaign will not end here, says Goff‘s Enterprises. Goff has partnered with Cory Zimmerman of Z2 Marketing and created the This Time Tomorrow Foundation. They will continue to raise funds for several different cancer organizations including LLS, and will hold another event next year. Because of the amount Goff raised during the campaign, The This Time Tomorrow Foundation will soon be the naming sponsor of a grant being used to fund additional research for LLS.
